Cognitive Rehabilitation
The brain is not ‘hard-wired’ as once thought. The science of Brain Plasticity - the ability of the brain to change with experience - has led to the development of effective treatments to improve mental or cognitive abilities. In my practice, I administer brain plasticity-based cognitive therapies to help my clients improve their attention and memory, as well as problem-solving and goal-management skills. Treatment-related improvements in functional abilities often contribute to a greater sense of agency and a better quality of life. You can learn more about the application of brain plasticity science to clinical practice in an article I published here.
My clinical practice is informed by my active participation in peer-reviewed research. In my own studies, I have actively contributed to the development and validation of novel cognitive therapies and have been the recipient and Principal Investigator of 15 research awards from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Collectively, I have over 20 years of continuous research funding and have invented several patented approaches to treatment: US 9,601,026; US 9,308,445; US 9,302,179. You can learn more about my research here.
Neuropsychological Services
In my practice, I also administer neuropsychological assessment: an approach that provides greater insight into the cognitive and psychological functioning of my clients. Targeted examination of the functional components of brain function (e.g., evaluation of cognitive, motor, behavioral, language, executive function and mood regulation) provides critical information that informs diagnostic impressions, defines cognitive or mood-related abnormalities, and guides the selection of effective treatments.
Psychotherapy
I also provide psychotherapy for individuals and couples: a process designed to increase awareness and connectedness to thoughts, feelings and actions. Psychotherapy can foster a greater sense of well-being by improving self-management of patterned behaviors that may produce discomfort or distress.
Consulting
I am also an expert consultant to start-ups and other innovators of neuroscience-informed therapies or related technologies, forensic investigations and litigations, as well as individuals, families and other treatment providers. I am also available for consultation in legal matters, with extensive experience in expert testimony, depositions and court appearances.
